Weaving Within Reach Book Shoot | Flax and Twine

Last year, Anne Weil of Denver-based Flax and Twine reached out to me about shooting her second upcoming book called Weaving Within Reach, published by Penguin Random House. It was a week-long project with an amazing team of women, including styling by Natalie Warady, and assistant help by Jimena Peck. We shot at locations around Colorado such as the Amigo Motor Lodge in Salida, the Bread Bar in Silver Plume and in Westcliffe, Colorado. I LOVED being a part of this project. Enjoy some sample spreads, as well as some favorite images from the book. And be sure and check out Flax and Twine’s site…she is an amazing source of endless inspiration! The Story of Cochineal in the Canary Islands for Knit Wit Magazine

Just over 60 miles off the western coast of Morocco lie the Canary Islands: seven Spanish islands that are historically considered the bridge between Africa, Asia, and Europe. Within this deep history lies the story of cochineal, a small insect that grows on prickly pear cactus and produces a spectrum of red, from soft lilacs to deep crimson. To understand the Canaries, to understand the color red, you have to understand cochineal.
So, that’s what we set out to do. Two photographers, we met in Montana a decade ago, and later made a pact to take a workshop together every year. This year, we decided to go on an adventure instead, to follow the story of cochineal on the Canary Islands—first, on the lush and tropical Gran Canaria and then on black, volcanic Lanzarote." -excerpt from fellow photographer and decade-long friend, Greta Rybus' and my article in the latest issue of Knit Wit Magazine.

Trent Davis Bailey at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for Aspen Sojourner Magazine

Recently I photographed Trent Davis Bailey, an artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Aspen, Colorado for Aspen Sojourner Magazine. It was part of a feature piece on the ranch's 100th Anniversary. Trent's work is both beautiful and gritty at the same time. So happy to have spent the day with him!

Also, shot a portrait of ceramicist, Sam Harvey.

Olomouc, Czech Republic!

Dobrý den from the Czech Republic!  I'm currently in the beautiful, historic city of Prague where I am leading a National Geographic Student Expeditions Photo Workshop for two weeks.  Tomorrow, the students arrive from all over the US for the intensely packed trip, complete with an excursion to Southern Bohemia.  National Geographic photographer Mattieu Paley is with us for the two weeks as the Nat Geo Expert who will work closely with the students as we are out and about shooting.

I came over a bit early to explore the much smaller, non-touristy city of Olomouc (pronounced Olomoats)...about two hours from the Polish border.  It was a cute, quaint little town with windy, cobblestone streets and friendly faces around every corner.  Hope you'll enjoy just a small handful of images from there!  More to come...
